About SUMO

OCHIIZUMI

Sumo wrestling, a traditional sport originating from human instincts for struggle and grappling, has been practiced around the world since ancient times. Its origins in Japan are linked to myths of strength contests in the "Kojiki" (712) and "Nihon Shoki" (720), as well as the legendary imperial match between Sukune and Kehaya.

Over its long history, sumo gradually formalized and refined its rules and style, becoming a distinct sport and a unique traditional culture of Japan. Elements like the ring-entering ceremony, ranking lists, decorative belts, topknot hairstyles, kimonos, and the matches themselves retain their Edo-era appearances, still evident in modern sumo.
